SPLENDOR IN CANGAS DE ONIS

By Ash Ford at 2011-01-11 23:48:09

Holidays in Spain

Cangas de Onis is a place that radiates beauty, a place where the famous five stars Parador waits for its guests. The small resort is the perfect place for those who love spending time to admire the breathtaking surroundings, accommodated in one of the most beautiful hotels in Spain. There is another big advantage that Cangas de Onis has in order to attract tourists: it is a place where you can come directly into contact with the amazing culture of Spain. Situated at the foot of the Picos de Europa mountains and having the Sella river nearby, the landscapes are stunning. Imposing peaks which guard the region are visible from almost every corner, offering the impression that you are surrounded by peace and tranquility. The feeling of peace and tranquility is also offered by the San Pedro Villanueva Monastery, which quietly lives its days very close to the Parador.

History of the Parador

The Parador had a central role to play in Spanish history: it is the place from where the Christian re-conquest of the country from the Moors began. The fight was started by Pelayo in 722 AD, who soon became the first Asturian King. His role was of great importance because these are the roots of what Spain is today. Parador was born in the 8th century, from the command of King Alfonso I, who was married to Pelayo’s daughter. The Parador has two rooms which were transformed into museums, as too many objects discovered inside its chambers were of too great historical importance for Spain to not display them.

Day trips

If you visit the Parador for a few days, you won’t get bored, as the Parador is the departure point for a series of entertaining day trips. A wonderful day trip is that to the Picos de Europa; this is a Natural Park which patiently waits to be discovered and explored step by step. You’ll have the chance to see some spectacular species such as the wild boar or the golden eagle. For the more religious, a whole day is necessary to see all the churches and the monasteries in the area, most of which were built in a Gothic or Romanesque style. If you are a gourmet person, Cangas de Onis and Asturias in general are great; the best types of cheese in Spain are produced here.
