Places for tourists in Spain-Artistic Madrid

By Ash Ford at 2010-12-23 02:51:56

Ever wished you could see the whole world? Go on a world tour and explore the beauty of the planet? If you have been planning a trip somewhere but cannot decide the destination, then let me be of assistance. If you are looking for a place that is rich in history, with beautiful architecture and museums that have amazing collections of art then Madrid is the place to go.

If you are an art lover then Madrid will be heaven for you. The city has not one or two but several museums that are the homes of prominent artists. Make sure you do not rush your trip, or else you will miss so many things.

Those of you who are into modern and contemporary art must visit the Reina Sofia museum of Madrid. One interesting fact about this place is that during the 18th century it used to be a hospital. The old hospital was renovated and converted into a gorgeous museum in the early 1990s. The official name of the museum is Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. The main attraction of the museum is the famous painting, "Guernica" by Picasso. The museum is also the home to “woman in blue,” another masterpiece by Picasso.

The museum does not only have a collection of magnificent art, it also has a library that specializes in art of the 20th century. If you wish to do some reading then you can spend a good amount of time in the library.

For those of you who are big fans of impressionism, Sorolla museum is the place to be. This museum is named after Joaqin Sorolla and it is his studio that has been converted into a museum. The building was built in 1910 and no changes have been made to the original structure. Another interesting fact about the museum is that the last canvas Sorolla was working on before he died has been kept intact in the same place where the artist left it, along with the paint brushes.

Book lovers and knowledge seekers will have the time of their lives in the national library of Spain. The building is also known as the Palacio de Bibliotecas y Museos in Calle Serrano. The library is the home of several million books, and an archive with more than 20,000 newspapers. Other than that, you will find some of Spain’s most important drawings and more than 2 million pictures. Where else will you find a museum so rich with history? I believe there is no point in missing this chance of a lifetime to see such spectacular artifacts. Do not procrastinate, because adventure awaits you.
